HISTORY FACTS


After serious work, research, experience, Dr Ngwa Che Francis officially planted the first plant, which was Rosystonia  regea (royal palm) on the 10 th of June 1994. The founding director, did a lot of cross breeding on the palmae family, from the wild he cultured 16 species of palms which were the root plant of SABOGA.

Some time later, there was the quest for medicinal plants as such, a lot of researchers thought of this lone botanic garden in the Savannah region, thus, the Savannah gardens was planted. This garden contains the riches gene bank in the family Orchidacae in the country. The planting of flowers in the garden attracted researchers, safari groups and students who visited the garden daily for varied purposes. Dr Ngwa Che being somebody who appreciated beauty, work done and the weight of people in the society, he immortalised many a-people in monuments and lanes.

A few years later, the herbarium was opened on September 06h 2003. SABOGA has become an open laboratory for the studies of plants, its characteristics and certain phyla of the plant kingdom. Approximately, 113 students from universities within and without the country visit the place yearly for research.

The influx of groups and organisations to the garden motivated the setting up of the restaurant, bar and accommodation.
